DAY 27: how bout just buying a band?…

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006 at 11:24 pm.

I had a great idea today that I’m sure is completely unique.

Well, likely I’m not the first to think of it, but I felt pretty good about getting smacked upside the head with this idea. See, building a band from scratch is no easy task.

1. They have to be good musicians
2. They have to like your music and be stoked to play in your band
3. They have to be willing to work with your budget (i.e. they’ll agree to whatever you pay them)
4. They have to like each other or things will get messy
5. They have to have time to add this to their “already-busy” schedule of work, other bands, etc.

OK, so I’m finding all these out the hard way. Don’t seem to be getting too far this week. But today I was talking to a friend who’s in another band and he was telling me about their woes with their singer. Seems they’ve been set back a couple of months due to unforeseen personal issues.

Then it hit me. He’s a great guitar player who already has a band. Funky drummer. Solid bassist. Good vocalist (just on break right now).

Since I’m doing the solo singer/songwriter gig, couldn’t I just “hire” them as a backing band? It’s so crazy it just might work. We’ll see if they have room in their schedules.

Tip for the Day: Money Talks. It’s amazing how things change when you throw that in the mix. Suddenly, “players-for-hire” are not so busy. :) It’s a funny thing, but it’s the way of the world I suppose. Might as well play the game.
